Florida State Resources You Didn't Know You Needed

By Katherine Gardner on August 11, 2016

Florida State has so many amazing resources to offer in order to give each student the best education and experience they can possibly have. There’s no reason to go through college without planning out your future at The Career Center or kayaking with friends at the Rez or joining a club that makes you proud to be a part of. College is about more than just going to class and studying in the library, get involved and take advantage of all the resources Florida State has to offer!

The Career Center – In my opinion, the career center is the most beneficial resource that is provided to Florida State students—hands down. With the very real fear of being unable to find a job after college on so many student’s minds, this resource is truly invaluable. With the assistance of The Career Center, the thought of life after college no longer seems as intimidating as it once did. Here are some of the areas that I found to be most useful:

Resume and Cover Letter Builder: Building your first resume or cover letter can be a very intimidating task to accomplish. How are you supposed to know what potential future employers are expecting to see, or what will set your resume apart from the rest? Well, luckily for us The Career Center is equipped with a handy dandy resume builder that will essentially create a professional and organized resume for you in minutes, all you have to do is fill in the blanks. It’s that easy. In addition to creating a top of the line resume, The Career Center is generous enough to review and critique your resume for you before you send it out to potential employers. What more could a college student ask for?

Job and Internship Database: This feature of The Career Center is really incredible. By simply typing in a job title, key word, location, or company name you can scroll through endless available jobs and internships that interest you in a matter of seconds. You are given the necessary information in order to apply for the position, as well as the option to favorite whichever jobs you think you might want to apply for in the future when you are ready.

Mock Interview Program: There comes a point in each person’s life when they must become comfortable with the interview process, and what better time than now? For those of us who have either yet to have a real interview or have never warmed up to the process of attempting to sell ourselves to a complete stranger, The Career Center is here to help! Students are able to schedule their own mock interviews online and then attend their interview at The Career Center on campus. This program allows students to practice their interviewing skills and gain confidence in their ability to complete an interview, a skill that will certainly come in handy in the near future.

FSU Campus Recreation – Finding time to workout regularly might seem daunting when classes are starting to pick up the pace and football season is in full swing, but one thing that will always lift your spirits and calm your mind is a kick-ass workout. There’s no reason for the freshman fifteen to go from a fun alliteration to a not-so-fun reality because Florida State has everything you need to keep your endorphins flying. The FSU Campus Recreation website is one of the best ways to stay on top of your fitness. Here are some of the best activities they provide:

Group Fitness Classes: I will be the first person to say that aimlessly going to the gym with no game-plan and no gym buddies gets old fast. I’ve tried the weight machines and I’ve tried running on the treadmill until I think I’ll die of boredom, it’s not my thing. I’m a person who needs some direction. Attending the Group Fitness Classes that are provided by Florida State and completely free to students is one of the best things you could do for your body and your mind. FSU provides over 30 group classes, ranging from yoga to high intensity cardio to spinning classes. All you have to do is sign up for the class online and show up ready to work!

Outdoor Adventures:  If you’re sick of the gym all together or you just need to get out of the library and into some fresh air, check out the outdoor activities that are provided for FSU students. They’re a ton of fun and you’re sure to meet some amazing people on your adventures. You could go on a two day hike and camp out under the stars, or go for a paddle board ride with friends and maybe even run into some manatees. If you’re looking for something a little more exciting (what could be more exciting than running into manatees?) Florida State just opened a new high challenge course that is sure to get your heart pumping.

Nole Central – This is a website where students are able to discover all of the clubs and organizations that Florida State has to offer. There is a club fair that is held in the Union at the beginning of each semester, however I can tell you from experience how completely overwhelming each of those fairs actually are. This website allows you to take your time and look at each club individually before signing up to be a part of one. This website also features a calendar that lists each of the events that will be taking place on Florida State’s campus, providing students with an easy way to stay involved and up-to-date.
